Removing oil seals

Thanks for the help on getting the brake shaft out, but I have one more question. What is the "best" way to remove the old oil seals??? I can't pry them out and am very puzzled on how to get them out. Also, to the new seals go in with the flat part facing the pedals??? Thanks. This is all on a '52 Super M.

I just replaced my seals and brakes today on a 52 super M. You have to remove the plate between the transmission frame and the brake houseing. You will see three or for slots that you can drive a screw driver in and pry the plate back. The first half inch will be hard and then it will fall right off. You can then drive the old seal out from the back side. Clean up the houseing and remove the o ring carefully. The new seal goes in with the spring in the seal faceing the transmission. Seat the seal and relube the o ring. The plate will go in as hard as it came out. I lined up the plate and installed the 5 bolts with out the brake housing. I the used a short piece of 2 x 4 and tapped the plate back on. Good time to check the springs and roller balls. Mine were shot. Replaced every thing along with alot of the old nuts and bolts. Good luck

Put another way, the spring and lip of the seal face in, toward the oil flow. With the lip facing out, the seal will leak. I believe with maybe an occasional exception that this is true of all seals -- the lip against the oil.

Many kinds of seal pullers. Here's a HF one I used to pull the PTO seals. David........

NC Mike's advice will only work if the bull gears are removed first!
You will break the housing if you try to remove it without bull gear removal. Several Forum posters have had that experience.
You will have to be patient & dig, pry, punch, hammer, etc., etc.
I like to replace with 2 new style seals and put lithium grease in between the seals. Install seals with the open side & spring towards the oil source (transmission gears).

When you say "lined up the plate" how does it get lined up?? The only irregualar marks on the plate I see are two small holes that seem to go nowhere. Are these the alignment holes? If so how does it go back in? Thanks for the advice.
