46 H Rear end noise

When I run my H down the road in 5th gear the rear end has a very load whine. A few years ago I changed the gear oil and used a lighter weight gear oil than what was called for. (at the time I was just using it for shows and not working it and the gear oil that was available was free) If I put a heavier weight gear oil in it will that quiet the rear end down any? I"ve been around this tractor since I was a kid and don"t ever remember the rear end being this loud. Thanks.

That lighter weight oil may have caused damage that will now take considerable dollars to fix. The correct weight of oil may muffle the noise, but it won't cure it.

I agree with Rusty Farmall. There is a reason that certain gear oil weights were specified by the manufacturers and oil of a lighter weight could certainly cause some problems. Free should not be a factor in what oil you use unless MAYBE in something you know is already worn out.

Maybe it's just old, thus worn. The 300-up uses Hytran, perhaps the equivalent of 10W. I don't know if IH changed anything to compensate for the lighter oil or not. 5th is not an actual gear, but direct drive. a splined shaft fits into another shaft. 5th has a rather loud hum which is normal, but I wouldn't call it a whine. Perhaps the differential gears make that noise at the higher speed of 5th. If the other gears sound normal, put 140W in it and see if that helps.

I've been running 80-90 weight in my H, which is relatively quiet in road gear. My W4, however, is quite a bit louder. I've suspected that it may be in one of the axle bearings (inner or outer), but could it be that the bull gears moving around that quickly create a vibration in the fenders and all those floor panels?
