Bittersweet Day, Brought Home Grandpa's Farmall H

Well, it was a mixed emotions day. Gramps passed away Christmas 2006, and today I finally brought his 1946 Farmall H home. I would rather have him back, but the boys and I are excited to have this small piece of his legacy. We plan on keeping it in the family. It runs great, but could use a wash job. Maybe next year I'll do a restoration. I've already restored his #25V sickle mower and plan on mowing some hay fields next week.

The first order of business (after a power wash), is to get the Liftall working. It has 1 cylinder hooked up but it doesn't move...might just be frozen or out of oil. Hopefully something easy, since its needed for the mower.

Well, I'm sure I'll be back with more questions.

Very nice H! Sorry to hear about your Grandpa, I lost my Grandpa in '98 and miss him alot. I now have his '43 H that I restored.

Sorry to hear about grandpa also. Looks like a good tractor. Might want to check s/n because unless grandpa put a super h hoon on it its probably a 1953 stage 1 super h, super h only made in 1953 and 1954. My uncle had a 1954 stage 2 with the live hydraulics, battery under the seat; but it's only job was to pull the square baler.

It"s definatley a regular H from 1946, I"ve checked the SN. He bought it new in 1946 when he was discharged from the Navy after WWII. Several years ago, grandpa had the engine rebuilt with oversize pistons. I guess he figured that made it a Super H, so they put a Super H decal on it!

Forget the bitter and enjoy the sweet....like those boys seem to be doing!

Grandpa is dead and I am sure he'd like nothing better, than to see you enjoy his old tractor.

Now...I am a grandpa, and someday.....I'll croak and be scattered in the wind. No need in mourning over me....but for the living to enjoy their lives and their children and get on with it. It would be nice to think that instead of being sold off in an estate sale....some of the kids will finish wearing some of this stuff out...using for what it was made to do.

If your Grandpa had it rebuilt...then he'd probably appreciate a new coat of paint as well.....fix it up and turn them boys loose on it when they're old enough.

Mark...you hit the nail on the head. Grandpa used this tractor to farm with for most of his life and he wanted it to be passed on to someone who would take care of it. Grandma said the same thing...he'd be tickled to know we've got it home. The boys are excited and can't wait till they can drive it too (someday).

I do plan on giving it a good paint job and going-over, maybe a project for this fall/winter.

Thanks again!

Sorry to hear about your grandpa... I have now lost both of my grandpas, but I was blessed enough to have been able to spend a lot of time working on tractors with them, and believe me, there's nothing cooler in my book than seeing younger generations carry on what people like our grandpas were so proud of. That's a beautiful tractor and you and your family should be able to enjoy it for years to come.

The funny thing is, the H my grandpa left me is still my favorite tractor (even if it's not my finest looking one anymore) because of its sentimental value, the way it runs and works so well, and most of all the memories I have from working on it with both my grandpas. Hold on to that one, you'll always be happy you did!

I aquired my Farmall 504 Diesel from my Grandfather and I aim to build it back to what it was in its hayday! Good luck!
