My Farmall "A" quit running.Through the process of
elimination,I discovered there was no spark to the plugs from the magneto.
Never had any trouble with the mag before and didn't know much about it.I did figure,though,it must have a coil and a set of points.
Took it off and apart.Had the weird shaped,old coil tested.It was no good.The points were clean and working fine.
They wanted $200.00 for new coil.DAAAAA!!!
There MUST be a cheaper way.I'm always willing to try something once.
My other tractor has a $20.00 coil hooked up to
a distributor and points. Why can't I do the same.
I threw away the old coil,attached an ordinary
12 volt coil to the nearby oil filter casing and
wired it to the points in the mag.I also discovered to change the condensor to a $4.00
common 12 volt one.,,,runs better than it ever did!
My question to you guys is this,,,,,,,
Did I invent this proceedure or is it in the books as a common,less expensive way to replace a faulty coil in a magneto???

lot of guys do the conversion when the mag "gives up the ghost". if you need parts or rebuilds, there is a guy on the board goes by the name "magman" he really knows his way around magnetos. he can supply you with parts, rebuild yours, or sell you a rebuild mag. just put a post up calling magman, he also hangs around the cowboard over on nebraskacowman . com
 
better not apply for the patent. i saw your procedure a lot when i was a kid. you would see an external coil with a hole drilled in the magneto coil cap for the wire to go to. also seen many pony motor deere's with four automotive coils mounted outside the wico box to save a buck.
 
Seems to me, the man has already cured his problem, for even less than a new mag coil. Of course, purists wouldn"t find that acceptable, but I doubt he cares.
 
You are correct, but what we all find to be rather incredulous is how much money someone thought they could get out of the correct coil.

I am in complete harmony with you. It never fails to amaze me at what some folks want for certain parts.

I have just one old tractor on the place....a "52 Super A. It"s a working machine, but fairly well maintained......meaning it has fair paint and not held together with baling wire and duct tape. I have no problems with practical modifications to keep it running, because it will always be a working tractor and not a parade queen. I put cast centers on both rears for more weight. The rear tires don"t match but they have excellent tread. The generator is long gone and an alternator makes the juice. Somebody put an auto steering wheel on it long before I bought it. The seals are bad in the steering box and it got filled with grease. There"s no lid on the battery box. Somebody put a chrome breather cap on it...probably came from Autozone for $2.98. But, she purrs like a kitten and earns her keep as a cultivating tractor. The John does the heavy work and I"ll never get $32K worth of good out of it....but by and by, when it gets old and beat, I am sure simple mods will be made to it as well.
 
Yes one can keep them running with a lot of castoffs. Depends on what one wants to be driving in the field. Personally just being able to get the a job completed is not my only motivation My satisfaction is more than partially dependent on what I'm doing it with. If you want four automotive coils on a board strapped to your pony engine, that is OK, but I'd rather sell it so someone whom can fix it correctly and use something else.
 
One caveat; should have mentioned one also needs to consider financial limitations which may render my previous position/comments moot.

I have a F-20 that has a elect. starter on it and the mag was modified like what you done. But a 6 volt coil was used, Who ever done it did a real nice job with a grommet where the wire came through for the points and a small machine bolt was double nutted for the coil wire to attach on the outside of the cap, The outer nut was knearled so you could remove it with your fingers. This was setup like that when I bought the tractor back 40 years ago. I ran it for years like that and it worked good, But I changed it back to a mag when I restored the tractor.
