Farmall H for $550

Ok a little background: I got an H given to me but it lacked several items; Hood, Grille, fenders, Seat assembly, Governor, Starter, Generator, Carb and distributor. Also it is locked up. So I found a guy just 2 miles away with all the parts I need, not sure the price yet or I could buy another H he has for $550. The H is not running but complete with all the parts I need. Everything looks pretty well preserved. What do you guys think? Good deal or not. I am leaning toward buying it because even though probably more expensive than buying my parts separate it would give me an extra radiator (who knows if ine is any good) extra rims which I need at least one I know. Plus a spare everything. I kinda keep talking myself into it I guess. Give me you guys opinions. Chris

I'd buy it. And I don't know that you are spending more for that one than buying the parts seperately. The parts that you listed will be more than $550 purchased alone. And not that I reccommend it, but once you're done salvaging parts off of it, scrap price for the rest will be close to what you've paid for it. If it were me, I'd fix them both up. $550 for a complete tractor, even if stuck, isn't bad.

Either way you can't go wrong buying it. Especially if it has fenders on it. Those alone are worth a couple hundred.

Just my $0.02 worth.

I agree with IndianaRed, and I also wonder if fixing up the $550 tractor might not be easier, using the "free" one for parts ("free" tractors always cost you money!). You said the "free" H is locked up and the other one is "not running", so I'm assuming it can be turned and, barring anything major (like a cracked block), it seems like it would be in better shape. You probably won't know anything for sure until you get inside them.

But, yeah, I think $550 for a rolling chassis with all those parts you need sounds good.

Just a thought, maybe not even worth two cents. ;)

(quoted from post at 13:20:20 07/06/08) $550 will NOT buy the parts you need for the free H. Buy the $550 H and use the free one for parts.
I totally agree with Rusty's suggestion.

$550 will not go far at the CNH parts counter. I paid $70 for parts to rebuild two remote valves, all the pieces fit in my shirt pocket. Also I just ordered gaskets, ect... (4 parts) to replace my hydraulic pump, $60. Both of these jobs I supplied my own o-rings, price them through CNH. $550 for a solid tractor + a "free" one for parts is not bad.

Yea Red I was thinkin the same about the $550 H. It is in better overall shape and so I may try to restore it and part out the other to get a little money for the rest of what it'll need, ie...paint, tune up parts, possible head job, gaskets ect... Thanks Guys, I'll tell him this week that I'll take it. Chris

My brother bought a H a while back for 700 bucks. It was stuck (got it freed up without rebuild) and was missing the belly pump. He had about 1200 in it when it was all said and done. Sold it for 2200 in no time flat....

I would laugh all the way to the bank if I could get $2200 out of an H! (Or $2200 out of a 77 for that matter) The most I've seen a good H bring is $1200 or thereabouts, so half of that (or alittle less in this case) for a non-running thats near complete seems fair. I say go for it.
