Grill Screens

Just got the grills for the SMTA and the H painted. How do the you all feel about the trash screens? Seems like a pita to replace, repair them when these tractors won't see any corn fields the rest of their days.

I probably wouldn't worry with replacing them. But then, based the past history of my luck, something thin would soon find it's way between the grill bars and into the radiator. This would be something small but heavy and traveling at a high enough velocity to puncture the radiator- perhaps road debris slung by a passing car. Then I would have to remove the radiator and the grill and, since the grill would already be off, I would THEN replace the trash screen while issueing expletives and shelling out money for the radiator repair that would have likely been prevented by the smaller openings in the trash screen had it been there in the first place.

But that's just me; your luck may run different.

OK, two good reasons to replace them. However I don't like that red screen so they will be semi flat black.

(quoted from post at 07:51:12 07/03/08) I've got one H that does not have the screen. It is definately noticeable, even from a distance.

Thanks for sharing your tractor experience with all of us. It could come in handy. mike

Gordo,

I don"t know how you intend your tractors to look like when done, but no grill screen can make the tractor look "unfinished" as it"s certainly noticeable. The original grill screen on my H has 5 squares to the inch, not 4 like most screening you buy today. Someone sells the 5 square/inch material, but I can"t recall just now; possibly OEM. Just thought I"d mention this as long as you have the grill off. I have my H back to looking like it came from the factory (I was there when we got the tractor in 1950) but you certainly can do as you please. Yesterday was evidence that we live in a free country.
