How to turn up the RPM on a Farmall H?

Hello,

Is there any (safe) possible way to get a few extra RPM out of my Farmall H? It is a 1940. It just does not seem like it is getting the max RPM it should be. I never hooked a tach to it to see what it was putting out tho. Is there any adjustment I could do??

Thanks in Advance - Matt

Take the cover off the governor and have a look. The first thing you will probably see is the spring, and it is probably either stretched out or the holes that it hooks into are worn out. Both of these will result in lower than desired RPMs. While the cover is off, you will also see the adjustment for setting the maximum RPMs. Don't turn that screw out too much. 1/2 to 1 turn will make a big differance.

most of the old farmalls have throttle rods that can be adjusted longer to get more rpms. this wont help if it is already hitting the rpm stop.

Adjusting the throttle rod will do nothing more than change the position of the throttle handle. It has absolutely NO effect on the governor.

What is the max RPM that I would be safe at? I know that is says 1815 on the tag but how much higher can you go?

I wouldn't give it any more than about another 100 rpms. Much more than that and there is a strong possibility of the flywheel dis-integrating, and that would NOT be a pretty picture.
