Hey guys,
I have two I/H sickle mowers that have the same problem, every time I use them to cut grass/ alfalfa, i have the same frustrating problem, the sickle drive snaps then i drag the pitman and break that too, i was just wondering if there was anything that i could adjust so this problem will go away, i am not sure what the make and model of the mower is but i know that both mowers are I/H,
2nd question
I have a No. 5 JD sickle mower as well, and i was wondering if there was any way to keep the bushing that attaches pitman asm to the pto drive lubed, i burned one bushing asm up last week while cutting alfalfa, and i was wondering what the recomended time between greasing the bushing was supposed to be, one more thing, were could i get another one of these asmbleys, and possibly a part #. thanks for the help

I'm not sure what you are breaking but no, it shouldn't do that. Are your sickles sharp and properly adjusted? On the JD you carry a grease gun. Grease the bushing every half hour or so.

the piece that i am breaking is the metal part that attaches the pitman to the pto bearing asm, i am assuming that there is something out of align, every half hour a, WOW, i sure have not been doing that, will start though, thanks for the help

If you're breaking pitman sticks, it might be because the mower is totally out of adjustment. I think an owners manual will provide the specific details, but basically, the outer end of the sickle bar needs to be slightly ahead, or forward of the inner end where it is attached. Also, when the sickle reaches the end of its stroke, just at the point where it reverses direction, the mower sections need to be in the exact center of the guards. As far as how often to grease? Again, the owners manual will provide the exact details, but if I remember right, that ol' number 5 needs grease at both ends of the pitman stick at least once every hour.

Sounds like your sickle or guards are worn out and sickle knives not in time or registered. Make sure at the end of each pitman stroke the sickle knives are centered in the center of each guard and if not you need to adjust it till it is. You may also need a manual to show you how to set the lead on sickle bar if it's been bent or hit something. If the bar is too bent you'll never get it adjusted right either.

I am using a farmall "M" 2nd gear 3/4 open. i checked the timming last night and it is in time, at the end of the cutting stroke the section is in the middle between the guards. so not sure what the problem is. it gets quite costly when you take out the pitman and the sickle drive almost every time you use the mower, and i am sure most of you guys know how much that costs to replace, (40.00$) is there anything else that i could check to resolve these issues?
