MD is sending smoke signals

Drove my just purchased MD (FDBK 285523)home last week. Factory wide front, disc brakes, manufactured in Feb. 1952, original paint job. Ran fine, no smoke, 16 highway miles with no trouble. Then when I went to put it in the garage a few days later, I opened the drain on the water filter and let out water until it ran red with dyed diesel. when I cranked it, clouds of greyish/white smoke came out the exhaust pipe. Have I managed to get water into the diesel? What do I do now? Thanks in advance for any help

I am guessing the tractor was running or at least warm when you bought it. These will give any envirementalist a heart attack within 2 miles. Did it begin to fire and are you familiar with how to start it? Let us know, Chuck

From my experences working on and w/ diesels for what its worth the grayish smoke is ussuly oil related such as oil passing the oil rings & compression rings. The valve stem seals could be leaking as well. Maybe w/ such a long drive & the heat the seals have possible swollen and let oil pass getting on top of the pistons. I dont think that H20 is the issue.Be sure you drain the fuel tank as well. GOOD LUCK ...

Blue smoke is oil not burned in cylinders
black/gray,fuel related i.e incompletely burned execessive or irregular distribution, improper grade,
white smoke, misfiring cylinders

GENERALLY.

If the diesel wasn't completely shut off, or you had the diesel throttle up part way during gas start you will get lots of white smoke from unburned diesel fuel. Get it started on gas and warmed up and when you switch it over to diesel, after alittle sputtering and blowing all shades of black to white smoke, it should settle down and run on all four with very little smoke after it is at working temp. Put it under load and it is a different story. My dad and I have had one since 1949 and I would like to have a dime for every hour that is on it. RichH
