Constant High RPM on Farmall M (approx 1948)

My M will start and run at normal RPM for a minute then it creeps up to the point where it sounds like it is going to explode and it won't slow down regardless of throttle position. I tore into the governor last spring and could not see anything mechanically wrong other than the throttle lever part was wearing. Could it be carburetor instead? Any ideas appreciated.

Sounds like you have a problem in the gov. or the way the carb is installed. Also your carb and gov may not be set to each other as they should. The I-T manual has about 2 pages explaining how to set the carb and gov. to each other

Take the carb back off, Look in the tube to the govenor, youll see a Y shped peice with a square notch in it. Look at you carb where the tube monts to the carb, youll see a square peice that fits in to the notch in the tube. Ill be thats the only problem you have.

The engine on my Dad"s M ran away like that when I was discing probably 40 plus years ago. He fixed it and I think a pin that held the weights to the shaft in the governor came out.
