I know this is an IH tractor board but I don't know what other board is available to ask this question: Where could I find a #123 Self Propelled combine (built in the late 40's)in working order? My Dad had one in the early 50's and I'd like to find one to keep some history alive. The 123 had a gravity dump hopper, narrow rear wheels and dual drive wheels.

David

Mr. David D., I live in Ohio and have a passion for any iron out there. My uncles had a McCormick Deering SP like the one you described. They bought it in the early seventies when they tried their hand out in farming while still in High School. They called it "The Super Polluter" because of its tendency to spew pitch black smoke and because of its initials "SP". I love looking at old photos of this machine working and until five tears ago, I could visit it at its lonely resting place in ,my grandfather's woods. Sadly, with its poor condition and my grandfather wanting to clean up his place, the ancient SP went to the scrap yard. I know that someday I will have one of these old combines. Here in Ohio, I have seen quite a few while just driving around. With all the hype about tractor restoring, I fear that the other old iron will go to pots since people seem to ignore things like the old self-propelled combines. My advice is to take the time to really look. You could possibly take the country roads instead of the interstate on your next vacation. There has to be an old "SP" waiting in a field for you somewhere. Good Luck and please take great care of her when you find her.
