I use latest top grade 30 weight oil of various brands in my A. I have owned tractor over 40 years and it was used several hours a week mowing in summer and various chore jobs all year for over 25 years and probaly 30/40 hours year for last 15 years. The engine has never been touched internaly since I have owned tractor and it runs fine but is starting to smoke slightly when under heavy load guess if I had used IH oil it would have lasted forever.

I use Mobil Delvac 5w-40 in my H. I change it once a year and it works great, never uses a drop and always comes out clean.

We use the CNH 15w-40 diesel oil in everything else (three farm trucks with gas V-8's and six cylinders, 544, 1256, 1086, 2590 Case and 8630 JD). No problems at all from anything.

I use Quaker State 10W30 in everything from 1944 BN to my 2002 Impala. I may be nieve but it works for me. I will say however, that not all of the oil in older engines is filtered so if some crud does get loosened up it could get thru the engine again without being filtered. There is a screen on the oil pump pickup to get the big stuff. Dave.

If it works, use it. Possibility, not likely in my mind, that detergent can loosen some of the crud, causing engine damage. If you ever overhaul it, definitely use detergent. I really don't know why they make non-detergent any more, perhaps it's good for air compressors. My dad was using detergent in the 50's.

What are you using it in? If a letter series or number series through the 650, any major brand of detergent, as there is no such thing as low detergent. I have heard that the 460-up GAS 6 cylinders need low ASH, not low detergent, in that case NE Cowman is correct, you can use that oil in the others, also. If diesel, 15W-40 diesel engine oil.

Check a few MSDS sheets you will find a big surprise in detergent levels. And yes No 1 is a low detergent as some contain 22%.

I looked up ash levels once, there are differences there, I can't imagine how a difference in detergent level could do any harm, ash level maybe. Ash levels if I remember right went from about 2% down to less than 1%, or more than a 50% difference. No argument, but I have never heard the term low detergent before, and I have been on this forum since 1999. Ash deposits can build up on the valve seats, so I have read. Detergent is supposed to keep things clean, or at least in suspension so the filter can get it. Perhaps low ash and low detergent go together, I know nothing of the manufacturing process.

Sorry, I was using the term low detergent as a comparative term rather than a classification.

No apology needed -- one reason I reply to posts like this is that I think I might find out something I don't know -- the low ash thing has been discussed many times, I just had not heard the term low detergent. I would like to know what ash level is considered low, and which of the name brand oils are equivalent to Case-IH.

TSC Stores carries "non-detergent" as well as Carquest. CaseIH no1 is about 10% detergent which qualifies it as low detergent. I would not reccomend any use of non-detergent other than for hyd systems.

I use a low ash Cennex brand 30 wt. in my older tractors and Cennex 15-40 in the 1086's and MX200.
