I have a blown head gasket (mostly just leaking) on my 1939 Farmall A! Im getting ready to replace it and I need to know the torque specs for the head bolts (studs)! I also priced new head bolts (studs) from my local dealer. I just about fell over when he told me $10.81 each. For those who are not sure there are 9 studs! Anybody know a less expensive place to buy? Thanks in advance for any help!

The head bolts that need to be replaced are the torque-to-yield type. They are typically torqued in steps up to a certain torque, then an additional twist of 1/4 or 1/2 turn is added. They are stressed to material yield; if you looked at a used one, you"d see they are longer and smaller in diameter than an unused bolt. Using one a second time would break it.

They are used in specific applications; the only place I"ve seen them are on modern autos.

I"d think that head bolts on an A could be used forever as long as the threads are OK and aren"t corroded too bad or otherwise damaged.

Good luck,
Bill

Older manuals call for 65 ft/lbs. I have a newer Case/IH publication that specifies 80 ft/lbs on A&B headbolts.

Webers Reference page calls for 80 ft/lbs.

I've used 80 ft/lbs on the last couple I've done with no trouble.

If the threads are ok I would use the old studs.
Some autos had head bolts that you were suppose to use once. What size are the studs? Hal

my IT manual says 65 ft-lbs... when tightening them I usually do every other one..then come back and do the ones I skipped..torque to ~55 ft lbs.. then do the final torque of 65 ft lbs.. let her set for a few days and retorque,,, or run her for a half hour.. let her cool then retorque... why do you want to replace the studs??

I always heard at it is a good rule of thumb to replace the head bolts whenever you replace the head gasket! At $10.81 each I may ignore that rule! Thanks for the help!

The rule of thumb was pointing directly at the parts counter bottom line.
Bolts that have pulled or damaged threads, or are corroded/pitted should be replaced (in this case with used bolts. Aircraft, some specialty engines, and race cars may require, or afford new bolts.
I tighten from the center to both ends in 4 stages. 1/4 of torque spec, 1/2, 3/4, and full.
