I can"t seem to find the serial number on my 1948?? The left side of the transmission housing has this number; 8938DE, but this doesn"t match the registry serial numbers (6 digits no letters). Am I checking the wrong location? Do I need to remove the fender? The engine has a number on the right side: 0180.

Philip: First, if you don't know the serial number, how can you be sure it is a 1948 model. The serial number plate is on the left seat support, on the inside facing the other seat support. As CNKS states tractor and engine serial numbers are the same until 210,000, however that not much good to you as 210,000 is still Farmall A not SA. Even after that period the two numbers are close. My 53 SA is only off by some 2,000. That engine serial number under No.1 plug is on a machined flat surface and numbers are stamped. All other numbers on the block are cast in place.

There is one exception to the tractor serial number location. 1954 model Super A1, has tractor serial number on left side of clutch housing. That only applies to 1,957 tractors, from serial number 356001 to 357958.

I guess my age is showing too. The YT serial number search indicates the tractor to be a 1945 model A and not a Super A.

Hugh: Thank you for the SN plate location information. The SN is 143395 and the YT search seems to indicate it"s 1945 model A and a Super A, does this sound right? Thanks again, Philip

Philip: Yes that would make it an A. The change to Super A occured at serial number 250000, either late 47 or early 48.

I'm blind, didn't notice the Super in front of the A.

CNKS: I know you knew the difference, blind now that is a novel idea, I always pass those mistakes I make off as being old and getting stupid. Why don't we just let go at that and say at least we're both being honest.

Another reason is that that there is an intermittent short circuit between my brain and eyes. It shorted out just before the Super, and returned at the A, thus I never saw the "Super". Happens all the time. It would help if I would read the post again before blurting out my answer.

Should be a tag on the inside of the left seat support. If it is gone, check the engine serial under the #1 spark plug. Chassis and engine serial match up to 201000.

Should be on right side of the seat support. Hal
