hay rake question

i have a international 35 hay rake with hydrolics instead of being ground driven that i bought at an auction but i was wondering if anyone knew how to make it go into gear? It needs new hydrolic hoses first but all i have ever used is ground driven and was wondering if someone could give me some advise. Thanks

keep it hydraulic as you will need new hubs, new axle, new shaft and to add a gear box. Just too much work and money to make the change.

You will like the hydraulic rake for moving really heavy windrows.

You basically need another rake with the ground drive parts on it to convert it over. Most of the parts will not be available at the CaseIH dealer except maybe some of the bearings and seals. Even if they were still available they'd be so expensive that it would simply not be worth it.

Hoses will be far less expensive.

Is the gearing on the hydraulic drive in question, or is it your wish to make it ground driven?
If the former, There may be a pin sheared on a shaft, or some other component that is not functioning. Does the hydro motor spin. JimN

I think his question was how does he get it to work as a hydraulic drive rake? Since I don't know, I will step aside and let you guys talk.

Oh, he did ask "how to make it go into gear..."

I've never seen a hydraulic hay rake with any gears. There's a hydraulic motor attached directly to one of the basket wheels.

All you need to do is pull the hydraulic lever and adjust the speed with the flow valve. If it goes the wrong way you push the lever in the other direction.

I have helped hooked belts up to buzz saws, threshing machines and stationary balers, attached drive chains to corn snappers, hooked up all kinds of PTO drives, hooked planter drives on SA's Sc's and 200, and pulled ground driven equipment. I have never had to hook up a hydraulic motor. I too would be clueless until I saw how it worked.

Not having been around hay rakes for a few years, I didn't even know they made hydraulic driven ones. However, I have been around swathers that were driven by hydraulic motors driven in turn by hydraulic pumps that were integral with a gearbox driven by PTO shafts. The company I retired from was big into those units for swathers.
If in the case of a rake, it takes the place of a direct PTO driven set-up, it may either run off the tractor hydraulic system or a PTO driven pump. If off the tractor system, the tractor would need a detented valve and enough flow to operate the motor.
