Nebraska Cowman, I caught your youtube video of plowing with the Allis Chalmers.

The polish on those moldboards is unbelievable! They were like mirrors. You must've spent some quality time with a polisher and buffer. Those certainly didn't scour to a mirror finish.

Hi Guy,

Plows, discs, cultivators, etc. always scour out with use. If they don't, ya don't have 'em in the ground. :>)

DAD MADE US OIL PLOWS CULYIVATOR SHOVELS AND EVEN SPADES AFTER EVERY USE AND GREASE FOR WINTER. TO MANTAIN THE SCOUR" BLACK DIRT IN IOWA IS TOUGH TO SCOUR WITH BUT WILL GROW GREAT CROPS.
 

My dad always used grease too; however, my grandpa swore by paint! I'm not sure if it was easier or cheaper to apply than grease, and it looked rather funny to me, but it always scoured right off.
 
It must be the Nebraska dirt. Around here plows get shined up but hardly that mirror finish. To get that you'd have to spend hours with a buffer and progressively finer polishing compounds, and you'd ruin it first time out. The soil around here is way too coarse.
 
Generally coarse is better, if we got a rusty one we would go
back to the gravel bank in the pasture and make a few passes
then half a day in good old Illinois black dirt and we'd have that
mirror finish, you aren't likely to get it in the garden.
 
I have an IH 3-16 with the Super Chief boards, Still has all the original paint and decals on fronts and backs. Never been in the grond. It was here when I bought the place. Seller didn't want it and neither do I. Anyone want a really not shiney plow?

only soft center moldboards get that super chrome mirror polish. the wiese, tsc, or other aftermarket solid moldboards will not have that mirror shine.
