I bought a 1953 Farmall Super C a short time ago and haven't got a manual yet. Can anyone tell me what type of hydraulic fluid to use in it?

For the hydraulic unit under the fuel tank, I use 30 weight non-detergent motor oil. IH Touch Control fluid is no longer available and the dealer says it is the closest thing.

The book says 80 wt for the rear end 4 3/4 gals or 5 gals with a pulley. Touch control takes6 3/4 pints IH Touch Control Fluid. Hope that helps

Hy Trann, Your IH dealer should have it. I have tried other brands but have not been happy with them.

Paul, thanks for the info. Does the transmission run off the same fluid reserve as the hydraulic system?

No, it does not.The rear end uses heavy gear oil. My brain is fading right now but I think it is 90 wt or 80-140 something like that. It's been a while since I bought any of the rearend oil so the weight slips my mind.

Thanks again Paul. I appreciate the help. I'm still learning about this tractor (if you can't tell) but it sure is a lot of fun. I'm not much of a mechanic, so I hope I can get it somewhat figured out before something serious happens. I've used the tractor to play in the snow, but I'm anxious to get it out in the field to have a little fun and do some work.

I would first use 30 weight in the hydraulic unit, run it for awhile, and check the level. If the seal is bad in the hydraulic pump, the 30 weight will drain into the oil pan through the governor housing, thereby not diluting the crankcase oil with hytran.

By the way, always loosen the filler plug on the hydraulic unit BEFORE removing the drain plug. The unit is not vented, and can really discharge an AMAZING quantity of warm hydraulic fluid in an AMAZINGLY short period of time (less than blink of the eye) from that little drain hole.

Got a black eye that way last summer Peabody.Plug hit me just below the eye, the oil knocked my hat off and messed up my hair doo also. The tractor had been sitting for weeks I had no idea it would still have that kind of pressure behind it.

Peabody, thanks for the comments. This leads to another question. When I bought the tractor, the owner had just rebuilt something in the hydraulic pump. It still has a small drip, but it works (slow at times.) He said there wasn't a gasket because the pump was aluminum. Does this make sense? This rookie appreciates the help.

You didn't say where it was leaking. There is a gasket between the mounting pad on the engine and the pump. Lines from hyd reservoir use o rings. Shaft inside the pump has either a regular oil seal or an O-ring, depending on when it was made, to prevent leakang into crankcase. Use Hytran.
