can a farmall M handle a 7foot bush hog?
what is the idea size for a farmall M?

Trail type Bush Hog mowers will work fine behind your M. A 7' should be no problem. Try to find a mower with the wheels at the rear of the mower that are no wider than the mower deck.

At one time I had a JD trail type rotary mower that had the wheels located at the middle line of the mower deck and that caused them to be outside of the deck. This was not a good design. The mower could not mow out the wheel tracks nor could you mow close to anything because of the wheels. It was also very hard to back up because it was so short coupled with that design.

Some mowers have bolt-on axle stubs so you can put the wheels behind or beside the mower.

As said above, behind lets you mow close to obstructions. But in this position the mower is long and will drag on rises in the ground. If you are mowing rough ground and aren't trying to use the mower to smooth the terrain then setting the wheels beside the mower helps keep the blades out of the dirt because the wheels are at the center of the blades. I set the wheels this way to mow across terraces which are about impossible to mow otherwise. These are old, narrow horse implement terraces.

The wheels to the side are also useful when you are backing into big brush which you can't drive over. Wheels behind in this manuever will just try to climb the brush.

I have a very old 7ft pull behind that I use on my H. It has no problem going through high thick grass in 1st gear. 2nd or 3rd might go easier in shorter grass(1 foot or more) but still does well. I let my uncle use it with his M and he said the tractor did great. This mower is massive once you get that blade going it takes it awhile to stop. Make sure you get an overrun clutch for your PTO.

The M should have plenty of power to pull a 7 footer. You get your wiring straightened out?

i'm planning on finishing it up friday. thanks for all the help. is there a special name for the bush hogs that do not need the three point hitch? they have the two large wheels on each side. dave

DAVE - Look for an old BRILLION if You can find one.... Dad and most of the neighbors had a 6 foot wide model that the wheels were adjustable from the sides to the rear of the mower housing. Just about everyone in the neighborhood used them with the wheels in the rear turned in so they could trim up tight to fences & buildings. I ran that thing with the FARMALL Super H over hundreds & hundreds of acres.... Wider would have been better though.... 6 ft didn't quite take out the wheel tracks.... The PTO gearbox wasn't quite strong enough to take everything a 4010 diesel could dish out though.....

Dave,
I have seen them advertised as pull behind brush hogs, or trailing brush hogs. Like you said with the wheel on each side.

Seems like here in Texas they are referred a pull type shredders also.
