I've got about 4 hours on my rebuild. Everything seems to be going ok. Got a little flutter(not quite a miss) at idle. adjusted carb and no smoke but didn't cure. Off idle it goes away but a slight hesitation when I crack the throttle (gov. control). Gotta get in and re-torque head nuts and check valve adjustments. Does that sound like the valve adjustments on one or more are off to you? I just adjusted the timing(turning the cap slightly) by ear. I don't quite understand the procedure in the IT manual. Someone have a better idea? Much better weather here in south central WI today. No humidity and 80. But we are AWFUL dry. tried to get my wife to do a rain dance, she just kind of rolled her eyes at me. See you at the RPRU!!!

I use a small 12v light with clip leads....take out #1 plug, rotate engine until it is on compression stroke (ready to fire)and on the timming setting, at the pully....remove the cap.. clip onto point lead, the other to ground..rotate the dist. until the light comes on....the ign. must be turned on..... .

Definitely retorque those head nuts and of course you will have to recheck the lash cleareances since you will have the rocker assembly off. I had trouble with the #1 exhaust valve seating on the 51 H I rebuilt 3 years ago. It took several adjustments until it had roughly 30 hours on it. On the timing, retard it about 5 degrees from your current setting and see how she starts and runs.

Mike the rotor turns clockwise. So you want to turn the distributor housing about 5 degrees clockwise also to retard the timing.

Bone dry in Indy. Corn west of town is rolled up pretty badly.
