Super M 450 1st gear speed

Is there any difference in the 1st gear speed of a 53 Super M and a 57 450? If so, what is the difference.

BTW, if it matters, both these tractors were built so you could attach the
high-drum cotton picker to it.

Thanks for any info.

Unless the SM has the optional low speed first gear the 450 has the greatest reduction in first gear by a little. All other reduction gears through transmission and rear end are the same ratio. SM first 19 and 44 teeth = 2.31 ratio. 450 first 21 and 52 teeth = 2.48 ratio. Some SM came with 13 X 38 tires and some 450 with 15.5 X 38 which added to a 450 feeling slower in first.

Don't know what the Red Bleeder wants but he can install a 560 first gear set (54/19) for a 2.84 ratio. Further reductions can be had by going with a 560 ring and pinion. And then there is the TA on the 450 for even a greater reduction.

I changed out both gearsets on a SMTA and installed 15.5 x 38 tires. Without doing the math at this time, I remember the slowest speed was about 1/2 of a SMTA in first gear high range. Something like 0.75 MPH at 1400 RPM.

I should add that the gearset changes above can only be made with SMTA thru 450. The SM can be fitted with a low-low first gear. There is no ring and pinion gearset that is slower than the row crop.

I don't know anything about Cotton Pickers. It may be that some of the slower ratios are already installed from the factory. I think it is unlikely because the dropboxes have a reduction already built in.

I failed when I answered the other post to notice the tractors were high drum cotton picker type. I think they used the same ring and pinion ratio as the SMV and 450 high clearance, except early SMV serial # 3446 and before used the same ring and pinion as a regular SM. So if you happen to have a early SM with geared drops it may be slower in first than the 450 with gear drops. If cotton picker parts were added after tractor left factory, looking may be the only way to know whats in there.
