Need help identifying item found in super c tranny case

Emptied the rear tranny/differential case on my super c to begin the process of replacing a busted axle, and found this little metal clip looking thing in the bottom. Nothing on any of the parts diagrams that I can find. Any ideas?

Is that flat , hard to tell from that view. Do the cracked ends mate up like it was one piece at one time?

Are there any marks on the back sides?

Take it apart, you will see, but the top piece look like it was cut with a cutting torch!

Yes, and no.
And there is a mark on the back of one but I can t tell if it is a witness mark from wear, or just a forging mark

That was my first guess too, but the bearings I can see appear to be intact.

Someone didn't clean them out from when the bearing went out and was replaced??

From my interpretation of the photos, I would say it could have been one piece.

Just look too perfect to be a bearing cage and also seem to be too thick. And to find two virtually identical parts seams strange. I would expect to find a wide range of shapes and sizes.

Those pieces look to be close to an 1/8 inch thick.

Other than the broken axle were there any operational problems noticed before the axle broke?
