My son (17) just bought a Farmall H to do his first restoration. The rear PTO continuously spins, and looks like the bearings are out. This pto sits flush with the rear of the tractor and has the half moon shape lever that swings over the shaft to engage. How difficult is rebuilding or replacing this PTO?
Thanks

Not hard at all. Park the nose down in a ditch to get the oil toward the front. Remove the 3-4 bolts, pull the unit out.Buy him a manual.or all manuals. Owners, service and parts.Would make a wonderful Chrisrmas present.

Try turning the PTO shaft by hand WITH THE ENGINE OFF! Move the engagement lever up and down while trying
to turn the shaft. If the shaft won't turn you have a shifter problem. If it turns with the lever down
and won't turn with lever up things are fine.

It's not unusual for the cold thick 90 weight gear oil to turn the stub shaft with the engine on. Even
more so when somebody fills the rearend with 85W-140 beacause various seals are wore out and leaking.
