voltage regulator

I have my 300U converted to a 12 volt generator with a voltage regulator and its negative ground. I wanted to keep it close to original and still have a reliable electrical system. Works well for a few years and then problems with the voltage regulator. Every few years the regulator wont allow charging until I tap on it. As time goes it it take more and more tapping until one day it doesn't work and gets replaced. Had that happen a couple of times. Its going down that path again so I'm expecting it to not work at all soon. Is there any thing that could fix it like cleaning contacts or something that needs lubing or should I just plan the funeral and buy a new one now.

If it's the kind of reg that has a cover held on by 2 screws in opposite corners, then you can remove that cover and gently clean the contacts. Some folks say to use a dollar bill and slide it through the contacts, others say emery cloth. An oxide can build up on the contacts and very mild abrasive can sometimes remove that so the regulator can have another life.

If you aren't concerned with originality, then the alternator is a good way to go.

Thanks for the info. Replacing the regulator is one thing but if the generator ever dies its going to get replaced with an alternator.

Charlie, some VR's are labeled for use at NEG Ground while others for POS Ground. Having the correct one is best. In the meantime you might non abrasively with no grit residue clean the contacts now n then.
