Electronic ignition

Unless you are going for an exotic "racing/performance" "spark box", Pertronix is the only game in town with coverage for this old stuff. This site sells 'em as well as hundreds of others, and quite a few outfits "rebrand" them with their own name.

Be aware they are basically an electronic set of points and don't offer true "HEI" or "CD" ignition performance.

Also, if the ignition switch is ever left in the "ON" position without the engine running, likely you will be left with a charred $$$ piece of plastic, after all the smoke has leaked out.

on a side note. My coil is a 12v but stamped on it states it needs a resistor. Why does it need that. I thought that was only for 6v on 12 v system.

Dad just put a chevette electronic on the H been there for 10-20 years now, never have issues with it. I do think the advance is not right .He is happy that's all that counts.

CD is Capacitive Discharge which was early technology in high voltage spark supply for electronic ignition. Probably sticking my foot in my mouth but I think some how it is capable of firing multiple sparks during the firing cycle of one cylinder. HEI is High Energy Ingnition I believe it was what GM called their high voltage electronic ignition when they started installing them on most all vehicles in 1973. The name has been applied as a general term to many high voltage spark ingnition systems since then.

All 12 volt vehicles need a resistor on the ignition. Even those that came from the factory set up for 12 volts. There ARE some coils that are internally ballasted, and do not need an external resistor.

Thought long and hard about putting a petronix EI and coil in my 560. Finally did it and realized I was foolish to wait.

Tractor runs pretty much the same, as you'd expect, but it now starts instantly. It can sit for a month, and I touch the starter button and it fires up instantly. I've had it in for a year now, and it still surprises me how instantly it starts.

I used to always worry about wearing my battery down trying to start it.

Granted - a good clean set of points and a new condenser probably would have helped, but now I don't have to worry about that If the unit ever dies, I can just put the points back in if I'm in a pinch.
