IH 444 Diesel (British)

Greetings from Northern Ontario - long time reader, first time poster.....

I recently purchased a 1976 IH 444 - the British Diesel version, also know as the American 364.

I have been chasing a stalling issue for the first two months (runs for about 45 minutes then stalls). I have cleaned out the crud from the tank, replaced all the crush washers on the banjo fittings (some were missing) and now am for a replacement thermostat as the one in the tractor isn't opening.

I am also looking for gauges for it as none seem to work but I am still trying to troubleshoot them (the cigarette foil in the fuse was not what I was expecting to find.....). If I do need to replace gauges can anyone guide me to a source? I'm not intent on a restoration, rather a working tractor. I have found lots of gauge sets for 414s and such but not for the 444/364. Are gauges gauges? Will generic aftermarket ones work as long as they are 2"?

Thanks in advance,

Scotty

Hi Scotty, spend many hours on the seat of a B-414, 434 and 384 all Diesels.
Re Stalling, sure sounds like a fuel supply problem, sucking air somewhere?, some crud in one of those bango bolts?
One time on our B-414 it was doing the same thing and we found a sliver of rubber inside one of those banjo bolts. Must have
came from filler hose from storage tank. Also check the lift pump for leakage out the weep hole or Diesel fuel in the crankcase
oil can indicate a hole in the diaphragm of the lift pump. You can add some 2 cycle engine oil and some ATF to the Diesel fuel
to help lube the injection pump.

Re parts, google tractor salvage yards ontario, largest one is www.fawcett.cc in St. Mary's.

Good luck

Thanks JimB. I've done most of that alreaday. Cleaned out lots of crud, pulled every line, blown them out, replaced all copper washers. I've checked the oil for fuel - negative. The lifter pump doesn't seem to be leaking and pumps quite good when I pull the line off of the fuel filter.

A friend recommended that if it is getting too hot it may stall at idle. The new thermostat and gasket should be in today. I'' install then run a rad flush to see how it goes.

I'll check out Fawcett's. Thanks

Scotty

(quoted from post at 05:40:18 09/13/18) Gauges are gauges. Worst problem you'll have with generic gauges is the temperature gauge reading in Fahrenheit instead of Celsius.

Thanks. That's what I thought but wanted to be sure. I have no problem reading Fahrenheit or Celsius; hot is hot.
