Farmall C governor

Posted earlier but didn?t seem to go through. Lost all throttle response. Will start and run just above an idle, can get a couple hundred rpm out of it but that?s it. Took gov cover off, shaft bearing has come apart. I assume, with the thickness of the bearing gone, that?s why my throttle response is gone? The spring is good, almost no okay between throttle and linkage arm to carb. Will the new bearing solve my issue? I only use this tractor for a bin auger, but I don?t have to have it.. sure is handy tho.

replace the bearing and the spring also but i think there are other problems like setting the linkage to the carb and maybe rebushing the input lever if there is lots of slop they do wear there.

There is almost zero play in the input and the linkage to the carb hasn't been moved since it was running normally. Bearing is the only thing I can see that's different. Hoping that's it. Spring is good, but I may replace it just to be replacing it.

Also, look closely at the image I posted.. am I not missing another bushing/spacer on the housing end of the shaft? I believe it's called the shaft stop.. I don't know how that would have just fallen off the end of the shaft when I removed the cover but who knows.

You ASSUME backwards.

Spring pulls carburetor butterfly towards "open".

As speed increases, the governor weights acting on the sleeve next to them, then the bearing, which moves the yoke it contacts, attempt to move the carburetor butterfly in the "close" direction to contain speed.

You could take that bearing out and throw it away, and sleeve next to it, and the engine would "overspeed", NOT fail to rev up, as your initial complain indicates.

While you obviously need to replace the bearing, there's something else wrong.

Do the governor weights move freely, pushing the sleeve next to the bearing towards the end of the shat as they move outwards, and allowing it to move back inwards as the wights are "collapsed"?

Yes, the weights are free, the sleeve slides as the weights are moved. The spring "feels" good, but no way to know for sure as I've never had a governor apart. I ordered the spring along with the bearing today and new housing gasket. Dealer will have it to me tomorrow but may be Friday before I get to it.

The spacer you are looking for is pressed/driven into tne housing. It is hard to see as it will be covered with paint and dirt. It adjusts the pressure on the spring in the end of the governor shaft. Look closely and you will see it. You can drive it in further with a drift as it will be worn ar replace it for about $10 as I remember. Look close, it is there and appears as an indentation in the outside of the housing.

Forgot to remind you to look at the bump spring inside the acorn nut as marc walker posted, that spring is likely worn or broken. That was my problem on the last one I worked on. Mine was rusted into the acorn nut tube and was broken also.
