Farmall BN Noisy Final Drive Advice

Hello Guys.. I'm recently aquired a 41 Farmall BN Tractor. I am noticing that the left (as setting in the seat) final drive seems quite noisy.. There is oil in both final drives now.. But who knows how long it could have run dry for the last 77 years??.
Anyway, I have 2 questions: 1) Will the right rear axle and final drive from a Farmall A fit the left side of my BN? Are they the same housing lengths? Question 2) Is the small upper gear which drives the bull gear in the final drive removable from the shaft or is it part of the axle.. I am guessing if a gear is worn it is most likely the upper one? Thanks for your help!!

A lot of those old drop final drives growl. It's because of the straight cut gears.I wouldn't worry. Now if it clunks,pops.....Then I'd investigate

The gear is not removable. You are talking about the diff shaft on the B going to the tranny. The axle is where the wheel mounts.

It is likely that you won't find anything specifically wrong with the final drive. I usually put about 1/3 can of STP in the pan, then fill it with gear oil. Sometimes the thicker oil will quiet it down some.

I have a '47 BN. Had it for 20+ years. The final drive on the right side has always been noisy. Previous owner said it had always been that way. Check the fluid levels regularly and all is normal. The noise mine makes is a gear whine. Nothing more. The left side soes not make any noise.

Thanks for the replies.. The left final drive does not clunk, or click it just whines.. The right side drive under my seat is quiet; so i just assumed something must be up with the left.. I was going to restore this little tractor; but being a perfectionist I wanted to investigate the noise and see what I was getting into before I dump too much time and money into it if it is going to be a major issue to get the whining taken care of.. I have restored many tractors.. Just no Farmalls so far.. Every one is a new learning process.
Thanks!

I have a b that the final drives wine and adding Lucas oil stabilizer will quit them down some because it will make more oil carry up through the gears.

Ok..Thanks.. I will clean and inspect everything in there.. If it all looks good I will try some Lucas or STP and new gear oil and see if it quiets things up some..
