Random Engine Shut Down

IH 364 Diesel. Engine quit in the middle of field like it was starving for fuel. Towed back to barn. Removed hood. Checked fuel tank. (fuel clean and free flowing. Good pressure on Lift Pump. Replaced Air & Fuel Filter. Purged all air from system. Cranked up immediately. Ran for about 5 minutes then shut down. Purged system of air again. Cranked up first compression ran for 30 minutes.Took back out to the field. After 5 minutes of pulling a disc it shut down again. Any ideas?????

If it's a RoosaMaster pump, there is a rubber ring that disintegrates.Plugs up the return line and shuts it down.In a few minutes
after the pressure disapates, the thing will run till More rubber plugs it back up.Remove the little rectangular timing port cover
and see if there are little black bits in there.A 'pump job' is needed.

Delta Red, Thank you so much for your help. I will give it a try as soon as I get home this evening and I will let you know if it works. I don't have a clue where to take the pump in the Groveland, Fl. area. I'll do an Internet search for this area.

Need to know what make/model injection pump you have, I think it's a CAV DPA pump. If so there's a constant bleed fitting on top of the filter base that lets any trapped air out before it can get to the injection pump, make sure it's open. If plugged and an air bubble gets to the injection pump it will shut down. Also make sure if NAPA or WIX filter is used there is not an extra O ring placed in the outer top groove, that's the fuel filter inlet. I've made several service calls to correct this common mistake..

Dieseltech, I believe 354 has BD-154 engine with CAV/DPA injection pump. The next time it happens, I would have a clean bucket
ready and disconnect the fuel line at the inlet side of the lift pump and let it drain into the bucket. It should drain at the
full of the fuel line. The other thing is to loosen the fuel tank filler cap.

One time many years ago on our B414D with a BD-154, it would die under load. The problem was a sliver of rubber material that had
lodged in the hole in one of those banjo connector bolts.

Thank you Jim. You are correct in your assumption of the pump See Photos. It appears a good cleaning of the fuel system is in order. I will check all of the items that have been posted, this weekend if possible.

Did you ever solve your random stall issue? I have the British 444 version of the 364 and am experiencing something similar.

I am confused about the "constant bleed fitting" comment as I have never read anything about such a fitting before.

Thanks in advance,

Scotty
