660 won't start

New battery, cables and starter, turns over good, but will not pump fuel, no smoke. Pull it 15 feet and its running, it immediately starts smoking when being pulled. Got me not thinking straight. Thanks for any suggestions...Darald

Bought it last year, it started and ran good. This spring it broke the starter shaft, new starter, turns good etc. The glow plugs seem to work, when pulling if the plugs have been lit, it starts immediately, running clean, it will even start if the glow plugs haven't been lit, but burps and smokes for a few seconds. There isn't a speck of smoke when turning over, pull it and it smokes right now. Thinking here tonight, I will try the air cleaner in the am for a blockage. It won't even start on its own an hour or so after running. When towing it seems to be loaded up with fuel, huge smoking right when it starts, maybe the cranking is pumping in fuel but not enough O2.

After running 2-3 hours, will it start after engine is off for 5 minutes or less? If not that's a sign the injection pump hydraulic head has both rotor and bore wear, and fuel is leaking internally. Pull starting cranks the engine faster to overcome the internal leakage. If you really want to crank it faster, put an 806 diesel starter on. That's what's on my 560 and it cranks much faster. Starter nose will need re-clocked but it will bolt on.

Just a shot in the dark. Is your new starter turning the right direction ? Local tractor had three different owners, always started when pulled, never with starter, turned out some one had replaced original starter with a combine starter that turned opposite direction.

if the engine is not cranking up to snuff it will not start. diesels rerquire heat from the compression to fire. got to spin over pretty fast. something sticks in my mind about 200 rpm for cranking speed, someone can varify this.
