656 Hand Pump Lines

I am replacing the o-rings on the hydraulic lines that attach to the steering hand pump, the old rings appear to be crushed from over tightening. I cannot find any guidance in my service manual on how to properly install these lines. Is there any rule of thumb I can apply here?

Thanks in advance

Likely, the flange on the line tightens against the steering valve, metal against metal and the O-ring is in a little counterbore, and gets squashed a certain amount, and that's it, as you tighten the nut to a reasonable tightness.

It's NOT uncommon to see brittle old hydraulic O-rings that look beat up.
