I've owned my '47 M for 31 years now, and except for replacing the points about 20 years ago, it's been trouble free.

Went out this past Wednesday evening to try to mow down a pasture, and it wouldn't start. It would spin over great, but just not fire up and start.

I searched for and reviewed many posts here for "not starting" issues. Armed with that knowledge, this morning I discovered I wasn't getting any spark, and traced it down to points that weren't conducting any current when they were closed.

Cleaning them and dressing them up cured my problem immediately.

Thanks to all you guys with years of experience working on these old tractors, and sharing that experience with the rest of us. It's greatly appreciated, even if we don't say it as often as we should.

That's what we are here for,to help one another. Even if we get a little grumpy sometimes.Glad your M is running again!

your right about this forum; i too get a lot of help with my heard off this forum. when i run into a problem i check here first then see if there is a YouTube video on the subject. i did my first in frame overhaul on my super c that way. Charlie runs like a top!!!

If things are that original, I'd suggest new distributor cap and rotor. Very cheap, but the center electrode and rotor electrode are probably worn and youll get the same symptoms. I'd not recommend the cheap aluminum-contact type, go to a Case-IHC dealer, get the brass-contact actual IHC type. Cheap, and well worth it.
