My son has dug out a 46 baler out of the corner of his great uncles shed and wants to try and use it. He has it all greased up and running but tells me the threading diagram is no longer ledge able. I dont suppose anyone has a picture of one they would be willing to share? Thanks in advance.

Easy. Pull the string out of the box, through the tentioner device, thread the srting trruogh the guides ,through the needle eye. pullback and tie off to the frame. You can feed it some hay and hand trip it. Should be good to go....You REALLY NEED to order a manual.ASAP Too many things on baler to just 'wing it'.Especially for a 'newby'.

Hi, DeltaRed has the twine threading but a couple other hints:

1) Check the slip clutch on the front flywheel. When the baler was new there where about 6 steel wedges about 1" long that were insert in between the pressure plates on the slip clutch to relive the pressure on the slip clutch so it would not freeze to the pressure plate. We would remove them and store them in the twine box at the beginning of haying season and re-install when finished in the fall.
2) Check plunger safety block on the bottom of the bale chamber. The function of this block is to stop the plunger from hitting the needles. When the needles are in a tying cycle this block should be up in the bale chamber. It relies on a spring under the bale chamber to activate. This spring would break and fall off.
3) First, turn the baler over by hand using the flywheel on the front including doing a tie cycle. Make sure the needles return to their home position and the knotter brake keeps the needles in the home position.
4) Remove the bolt on the bottom front of each knotter and swing the knotter up and sharpen the twine knife and baler should be good to go.

PS, the knotters were either good or bad on an IH 46. If they were good it was an excellent baler for its time and if one knotter was bad they could be very frustrating.

Good luck with the baler 46 baler from someone that baled many thousands of bales with one.

Couple of things on the knotters too - make sure all 4 hay retainer spring are there and buy the best twine you can find. 9000 Sisal twine has become crappy with a lot of thin spots in it sometimes and will break easily on a 46. I've never used it but I think 7600 twine would work better than 9000.

Absolutely correct, you really need a manual. I still have a 45 baler. When the knotters work it is a great machine, but when they misbehave it becomes extremely frustrating. The Blue Ribbon Service Guides for 45 and 46 Balers are easily found and very useful.
