48 H upper thermostat housing question

In getting ready to seal the housing together with the bottom, I noticed a plug like round piece of metal that was recessed in a round of a well so one couldn't get at it. I sprayed it with blaster and let it set to ask you all what it is, and is for, and what it does, IF it indeed does do anything. Thanks.

The passage you are looking at is likely to be the bypass port. It allows coolant to flow past the Tstat. When built, the thinking was to allow enough coolant to flow to keep it cool without the Tstat opening. This was before the recognition of improved efficiency running well warmed. A prior owner, recognizing this, probably put that slug of metal in there to allow better heating and real use of the Tstat. I, and others, have suggested making a stainless steel plate (16 ga) that looks like a gasket but has only a 1/4" hole where that port is located. It works to do either. The Tstat has the capacity to flow all the coolant needed, and the tractor will get better fuel/work ratio at 180 degrees. Most original Tstats were 160 degrees to save alcohol based antifreeze.
