574 doesn't want its key

Two or three times each week I put the key in the 574 and rake hay for an hour or two. Today the key refused to go in all the way. Couldn't believe it but it has been that kind of year! Any ideas?

After you do that, go to your local friendly CaseIH dealer and get a new key switch, because you just eliminated all hope of ever getting the key in your current one.

Wet lubricants in key switches just cause the dust and crud to cake up inside and make things worse. First off, the key switch probably has a whole bunch of that packed up inside, which is why the key won't go in anymore. You need to blow and pick that stuff out. A straightened out paper clip works well, or a piece of stiff wire. Then use a DRY graphite lubricant.

If I may disagree. I've sprayed PB Blster in key holes, switch knobs, electric switch items, relays, lights sockets, etc., and it seems to dissolve all the crud, wash it away, remove corrosion, lube everything, moisture-proof everything. I use it for everything electrical, even old household light fixtures, vintage old electric items, and I LIKE the stuff. I may be wrong, I admit, but it works for me.

Here in Ky. there is a really little bug that likes to make his home in little holes like the end of an air fitting or an extra gas line that I forgot to put tape over. It happened once in the end of a new oil can before I ever put oil in it. Take a paper clip and an air nozzle and see if you can get some dirt out of it. Luck, Ellis

At work, I fix all the door hardware among other things, like rekeying. All of the locks that have this same problem are graphite buildup/gumming. I use PB to clean up the cylinders, pins, and lubricate handle/latches. Works really good and saves replacement most of the time. Spray it in, work the key in lock, blow out the crud, repeat.

Graphite is a temp fix as well as PB. Both will attract moisture/dirt/dust over time, so will a new clean lock.
