F-20 - - howling axle gears

Hey all -

Taking my F-20 across the Mackinac Bridge in a few days. The straight cut gears in the drop down axles, in road gear, by nature, are noisy while in road gear. I do have heavy oil in the drop-down gear boxes currently, but are there any additives that could be added to cut back the noise?

Figuring ear plugs at a minimum.

Thanx !

Pete

Take a look at lucas oil stabilizer that makes gear oil stick to gears and is said to make gear cases run cooler.

my F20 just growls like mad. Think its the bull gears. Have not heard an F20 that did not growl. Ear plugs.

Last year i put some TSL in the Cub gearbox it helpt to reduce the noise quite a bit.
This is there website: https://www.tsl-allstar.nl/?lang=en

(quoted from post at 08:47:17 09/04/18) My F-20's don't growl too bad, but they are on steel wheels.

I have 3 that run and drive currently and the only time they make any noise is when in fast 4th or with the add on road gear engaged. Otherwise they are fairly quiet.

Yup guys.......this is only a problem in the fast 4th at high (10 mph) speeds. It IS the straight cut gears making the noise.

Think I'll try some Lucas additive, and most likely, ear plugs for the journey. Heavy gooey oil will help some, but most likely, its the straight cut gears that are the culprit. Probably why you don't see straight cut gears in high speed applications.

If you had more time I would swap the gears from on side to the other, and check the axle bearings for any slop. Swapping the gears will let you run on the 'new' side going forward, they don't wear much from the little bit of backing up a tractor does in it's lifetime. Just my 2cents worth Greg NE
