Will a 12 Volt coil work on 6 volt system

My cub still has a 6 volt battery, I want to change the coil due to some issue's. So, will a 12 volt coil work in place of a 6 volt?
 
A "true" 12 Volt coil that will work on 12 Volts with NO external resistor is NOT what you want for a 6 Volt system, at best spark would be weak.

A "12 Volt coil" that REQUIRES an EXTERNAL resistor is very similar to, or the same as a 6 Volt coil, and would likely work on your 6 Volt cub.

But why not just get the correct (by application) 6 Volt coil?
 
A true full 12 volt rated coil would yield a weak spark if used at 6 volts. I would just get a new 6 volt coil and be done with it.
