IH444 Oil Pump Gasket

Hey all. You may have read my previous thread where I found low oil pressure after repairing the indication light. My oil pump cover was quite warped, which I got most if not all of it straight. I ordered and received the new cover gasket today, but to my surprise, it is tissue-paper thin... almost more of an anti fretting gasket than a sealing gasket. Should I use the gasket that I ordered, or would it be better to make one out of paper gasket material to take up for any imperfections? Thanks!

Ih has used gaskets to set clearance from early on pressure lube systems. The total end to gear clearance in between /001, and
.0005" If more, the housing needs to be honed/milled to set the spec, after the cover is made flat. Jim

On our C I sanded the cover flat and then checked the clearance with plastigauge and made a gasket out of some
paper the proper thickness to give me the required clearance. Worked great, have lots of oil pressure now.

My cover was in pretty bad shape. Warped in several places, and the port end was 1/16" or greater from the rest of the cover. I used some heat and press to straighten, along with a file, and sanding on a granite block. I've got it quite flat, and pretty sure its true. Although, I wouldn't be shocked if it wasn't perfect, and I was hoping the gasket would of be of some sustenance to take up for any of that.

Checked the mating surfaces and I got it tighter than I thought. Should be all good with the thin gasket. I will say, I dont know if the pan was ever removed before, but I was at the gasket scraping for a good couple hours! I don't know what was used to glue that gasket to the crankcase, but it was impressive. I even used my good set of gasket scrapers on it. Made up lots of new words, but its all clean now. I picked up some shellac on the way home the other day to use on the pan. I've never used it before, but if you guys think that's what was on there before, I a of love to hear some alternatives.
