I have a 1940 h that the mag is bad. I'm going to change it to a distributor. Are the drives between the engine and the mag or distributor the same?

In a word; Yes.
Just pull out your mag using the two bolts that take a 9/16" wrench, and use the same two bolts to install the distributor. Pay attention to the timing and the swap couldn't be any easier.
