banjo bolt tightness?

Have a 656D with a roosamaster pump. Was leaking at banjo fittings so I installed new sealing washers. That stopped it for a few months, but now they are leaking again. Tried loosening them until fuel squirted, then tightening them down. Did this 3 or 4 times. Still leaks. Drip drip is the same rate no matter how tight the bolts.

How much can I tighten them? Any other solutions or tricks to this? Do the washers get deformed if tightened too much so they will no longer seal?

had the same problem on my 960 ford. took the bolt up to the local cat place and they give me some o rings made specifically for gas and that took care of the problem. worked for me anyway.

So tight you'll think they'll break or strip out. I had the same leak as you after Dieseltech rebuilt my pump. I called DT and he
told me I wouldn't break them and go ahead and tighten them down. I did find a torque spec for them, cranked them down, and no
more leaks. Hopefully, DT will jump in here.

"wicksfield" has it right, those darned hollow banjo bolts have to be so *&%^%% tight you'd swear they'd strip or break.

Never had that happen (yet), those bolts and the "head" of the injection pump they screw into must be made of some darned good steel!

Those bolts are extremely hard, think I've only seen two break in over forty years repairing pumps. The washers I have the best luck with sealing are Delphi 5936 332C mild steel. Seat the bolt snug, then give it two flats, 1/3 turn. MAKE SURE there are TWO washers on each banjo line, if one is left off, bolt WILL bottom out, seizing the head and break the drive shaft.

I have seen banjo bolts that have been tighten so tight as to have the side holes In them egg shaped from being tighten and still be holding well.

The torque is 25-30FTlbs.. Those washers are a "crush" seal.. they're a 1 time use.. you might get luck or you might not, using them more than once.
The CAV/Delphi P# DT gave you are the best ones to use.

Are you sure your getting the right washers ?? as they do make two styles , next you may want to pull that line and look at the face of the banjo , one style washer is a plain steel and the other has a nylon insert . Over tightening can cause damage . Something in the back of my head keeps sayen your washers should have the nylon inserts

Thanks everyone for your help. I haven't seen any washers available with a nylon insert, but I did learn that there are mild steel and harder steel versions. I must have the harder ones. I replaced them again and followed DT's advice to tighten 1/3 turn after snug. That cured all but 2 of them. I cranked those down a bit more and no leaks for now.
