886 voltmeter

My 886 voltmeter used to be in the middle of the dial usually. Then a few weeks ago the needle would only go to the striped part on the left of the meter, the side that says "battery". I have been using it a lot with the cab blower running on purge with no problems. It starts fine and if I put a battery charger on the batteries the charger shows 95%. So would you suspect the alternator, the batteries or the meter? thanks.

With it running at 3/4 of high idle, the battery should read 14 to 14.4 volts. That is measured across the battery terminal. If 12.6 or so it is not charging. Jim

While the engine is running, check voltage at the batteries. Then pull the dash and measure the voltage at the back of the gauge. I was a truck mechanic for 40 years, and have seen some IH trucks of that time frame have lower voltage to the dash.Since you are starting fine, this could be your problem.Mark.

I don?t trust the volt meter in my 886. It runs clear at the right far edge of the green but I have checked it with a meter and is running just above 14 volts. It does go down towards the middle with the air conditioning and lights on at a low idle, so I just use it as a general idea and not factual numbers. If it starts after this long it must be the gauge.
