If you look at the picture of my 1940 A, there are holes on both the legs of each front wheel. Are, were, these press fit Zerk fittings at one time that got knocked off? I want to be able to service the the front axles.

If i'm thinking correctly of the holes you are talking about those are
centering holes from when the spindle was machined.

These holes are not for grease zeros. The wheel hubs have one zerk each and the vertical spindle tubes have one grease zerk each.
Your user manual shows you where they are.

They go through the casting wall. As far as I can see. They had grease in them too, unless they are in fact blind and someone tried to push grease through. This is why I am asking...

Found this on a Cub page, seems like this guy thought his broke off and added them. One guy said they arent for greasing. I will just leave them alone and remove the wheel to re pack the bearings and grease.

My Buddy used to weld the front spindles at the FARMALL PLANT for the 86 series and 88 series front axles, the spindle shaft went through a collar on the spindle that had a tight tolerance hole bored thru it and the spindle gets welded only on the bottom. It is possible grease from the spindle shaft inside the axle extension could get down between the spindle and and the shaft, but as some service manuals say, "No User Serviceable parts located inside that hole. I'd find a wood dowel and pound it into that hole. It was used to center the spindle during machining as many people said. Spindle was/is a steel forging.

I took all Our IH tractors and took the dust caps and put grease zerks on the side of cap and used grease gun to grease wheel bearings. Take that cap off drill hole in cap and weld a nut that fits zerk. Haven't changed, repacked or have a bearing go out or pull a hub in 38 years.
