12 volt generator

I am working on a 49 cub where someone "converted" it to 12 volt. It has a 12 volt generator on it. The generator has the normal two terminals, but it it also has the remains of a wire connected to a screw near the terminals. I am trying to figure out what the third wire connected to the screw was for. I see nothing like it on the diagrams. It appears to be a factor connection.

I have seen a ground wire hooked up to the frame of the gen nunning to the regulator.
