Valve spring compressor

Going to put valve seals in my 140 anyone got a recommendation for a valve springs compressor, I want a quality tool and do not mind paying a little for something good as I will probably will use it again and again

Many good brands out there. Basically anything that can be used on a car or light truck engine will also work on the Farmalls. The one I have is a Snap-On. Found it on eBay.

Another option you might think about and it will give you hands testing is renting one form an auto parts store. My Local O'Reilly's rent then sort of. You buy it then take it back and get your $$ back. That could give you the option of trying a number of different ones. I got one years ago cheap and it hangs on the shop wall more then it gets used but if I need it I have it. Not sure of the brand but it works well but is big and you have to have the head off to use it. I have also had one of those type that you did not need to have the head off but if you do that wrong you will be pulling the head any how because of a dropped valve

If ya do it right don't need to take head off or LOOSE valve in cylinder. Take spark plug out and stuff some nylon rope in cylinder leave some rope hanging out, run the piston up against rope. then compress spring, remove keepers, spring and the replace valve seal, put it back together. use the rope in next cylinder.. "Piece of cake"

Ya I know that now but back when I was 16 or so I did not know that. Some how time and age teaches a person a lot

I learned that I when I was about 12 or 13, since my dad was friends with couple of Master Mechanics. One was Head of the mechanic shop at Corp Engineers for McNary Dam, and was my dads boss. Both Master Mechanics taught me a lot, never forgot most of what I learned from them.. AND I'm still learning, but from some of the younger generation!!! lol lol lol

You have to remember my dad was a preach and college professor so he knew very little about engines and no one he really knew did either. I learn what I know by the road of hard knocks. Shoot I have never taken a shop class or any such schooling to learn what I know about engines I just read and did

I have several different valve spring compressors, but this one works really well for almost all farmalls (except cubs) and it is not very expensive.

It's great for removing the retainer, spring and keepers with the head still on the engine. Definitely use the rope in the cylinder trick. Sometimes the keepers are stuck and you have to tap the top of the tool or put a socket over the retain and tap it to shock them loose. It's nice to have the soft rope in the cylinder for the valve to press against in that situation.

I have about 5 others valve spring compressors that are typically specific to engines, that make the job easier on them or that the type of valve spring compressor above just won't work for, like overhead cam engines and flat head engines, like the cub.

Kind of wishing you hadn't posted, I was going to take a picture of my stuff and can't find my Snap On that is used with the head off. Found the compressor for removing springs with head on and found the air hose but can't find the different fittings for the spark plug holes, that's what I get for cleaning up and reorganizing a few years ago.
