Hand Crank Question

The battery on my Super A got a little low yesterday so I got the hand crank and was going to start it that way. I pulled up on the crank once and started to pull on it again and I guess it kicked back (never had a tractor do this), the crank spun around several times and gave my arm a good jerk. Later on, it did this again, what causes this?? I've had this tractor 7 years, hand cranked it 50+ times and it has never done this until now. Not a fun experience )

ordinarily, when an engine kicks, i suspect that the timing is too advanced. plug fires before top dead center.

One needs to learn the correct way to hold a crank when hand cranking one. Never hold it tight and never with you thumb wrapped around it. Also only pull up. As for why it did this, this time when was the last time you check the gap of the points. Point gap moves as they get older so that in turn changes the timing a bit. What happened to you is why I like the JD way of hand cranking since pulling a flywheel to start one can never get a harmful kick back. An A/C B sent me to the hospital years ago due to a kick back

the only thing that causes that is timing by ear! which results in the timing being too far advanced. check and set timing to factory spec. and you will be good to crank it.
i have lots of tractors i crank, but i have my timing set, none of them even try to mess with me.lol. try cranking a WD40 , thats the most compresssion you want to pull against. who says you cant start a diesel with a hand crank. its all in the tune up and timing for using hand cranks. i was starting dads W6 before i was 10 years old with a hand crank, had to, or walk to get the cows for milking.

If it has a battery ignition, the advance weights may be stuck in advance position. If a mag, it is timed too early.

If it has battery ignition, as the points rub block wears, the timing advances. So worn points can do it. At cranking speed, the magneto fires when the impulse clicks so the points won't advance the timing while cranking. However, a misbehaving impulse coupling can do it. You need to hear a good solid snap from the impulse each 1/2 turn of the engine. If not, the impulse needs work.

As already stated, time it as instructed in the Owner's Manual, not by "ear".

Timing retards when point gap narrows, not advance, so wear would do the opposite of what you say.

Yea yea i did it the correct way many years back and had a CRANK plum EAT ME when it kicked back and ran backwards for a couple seconds , i still have the scare above my right eye and a LUMP on my right elbow . And if your needen a crank for and Oliver O C 3 crawler i can show about where it is , So if ya want it bring your scuba gear as it is in about 24-28 foot of water in the far back irrigation lake at my uncles old farm as of that day on mid September Saturday afternoon i learned how to swear and it also brought out my Saxon temper . And from that day on i have never used a hand crank again .

THEM THINGS CAN HURT YOU.
