Hello everybody
I think i am in over my head. I have a Ih 3444 loader with a 3414 backhoe. I have had it around my property for about 25 years and had a new engine installed about 15 ago it runs great. Anyw ay last year My clutch got stuck in that i cant shift itout of gear becaus ethe clutch wont release. Ithink it got water in over the winter and as far as i can tell is rusted to the flywheel. I tried loosining the clutch from the access hole and previous to that tried running the tractor up a hill or into a pile of dirt to break the clutch free and could not. I tried to get a local tractor repair guy to come out and fix it but he never showed up and doesnt respond. I think he is busy doing easier work.

Any how i finally figured i am gonna have to fix it myself so i decided to pull the engine and dsimantle the clutch. Well it has been a trying experience. I am pretty good with stuff and have built a lot of vws and fixed things . But this is biigger all around

Any way i thought i was going to be able to pull the engine out the front and up but now that i got it stripped enough to remove i can only get it about an inch out before it hits the front mount, which is a loose mount in that it just sits there and holds the hydraulic pump, but it is inthe way of pulling the engine out. Am i going to be able to do this ? Or do i have to split the tractor? Any advice would be appreciated . I have some manuals and parts books but i am just not sure how this thi g is supposed too come apart or if splitting the tractor is necessary . I hope not. That sound like a hard job if i dont have another tractor to move things around.

Thanks

Hi, I have never worked on the Industrial models 3444 and 3414 but have worked on the agriculture models 384, 434 and B414.
I believe you will have to split the 3444 to access the clutch. I don't know if you will have to remove the loader frame or not.
It will depend on how the loader frame is attached to the tractor frame.

There is a Youtube Video showing how to overhaul a two stage clutch but your 3444 may only have a single stage clutch.

Good luck

I know its a little late, but I just pulled the engine in my 3414 two weeks ago. Because of the frame around everything, "splitting" the machine isn't really a great option. I used a plasma cutter to cut the engine mounts off of the floating plate at the front, and then the engine pulled right out. Oddly enough, when I did this, I realized I wasn't the first one to find this solution as someone had cut, and re-welded, the mounts many years ago already.

Well all just wanted to pass this along to the next person who might need to do this. I tried pulling the engine without "splitting the tractor" I could only get the engine about 2" out before the front plate got in the way. I didn't want to cut and reweld it as jeff did . So i split the tractor . It really wasn't that hard at all. Had to support it, then after taking off two bolts and two pins that held the backhoe, i took off the 4 bolts that held the frame to the rear differential. Pulled it forward with my truck and then we ended up putting it back in place with some big leveraging boards. I kind of wish i started with this plan , but it really didn't add any extra work cause i had to disconnect all the engine stuff and some hydraulics anyway. Sure enough there was rust on the clutch disc and it was only 5 minutes to knock that off and sand up the surface a little bit. Any way all back together and working yahoo. Anyway i contemplated and thought over "splitting" the tractor with lots of trepidation and worry but ultimately it is not that difficult. literally 6 bolts and two hoses disconnected.

Well good for you in figuring it out yourself. It's a good feeling when a seeming insurmountable job turns out to be easier than we think will be.

(quoted from post at 09:18:21 12/01/18) dirtkeeper did you get the engine out and back in?
I have a IH 3414 with front loader.

yes i did. as i mentioned above it wasn't too hard but i took a long time doing it. I don't think you can get the engine out without splitting the tractor or cutting the front piece as mentioned by someone else.
