Electronic ignition conversion

I am thinking about putting the electric
ignition conversion kit on my H how many
has done this also what are the good and
bad associated with this conversion

These old tractor have run for decades with the old point systems and will keep running running well with points. I have messed wit h few tractor that had the electronic conversion done to them and each time I have done that I had to put points back in because the smoke had been let out of the conversion

That is what I am saying and I have seen a lot of those electronic part smoke so to me it is a waste of time and $$

Also how do you time these tractors it has a distributor when it idles it pops and snaps sounds like popcorn popping at higher rpms I have changed cap and rotor gonna do points and condenser next could what I'm hearing be a timing issue?

Could be timing or it could also be valve that need to be reset or sticking. As for timing I do all mine by ear and go for highest RPM and easy start. If you time it to far advanced it will sort of be hard to turn over and kick back on the starter

I have never timed one...far as starting it starts usually before I can get my hand off the starter button it just has that popping....I'm 27 years old and have never owned a ih tractor I grew up on a 52 A model deere but I bought this H and I'm proud of it just want to get er right that way when I paint it this fall itll not only look good but run right as well

Do you have a manual like the I-T IH-8?? It has an area that covers how to time it using a timing light which you can buy form any auto parts store. By the way I have children older then you are LOL

Look in the table of context and you should be able to find a section on timing which should explain how you time it if the manual is any good

If it is an owners manual it may not have that info. If it is a shop manual it should have that info

my experience with the electronic ignition has been the opposite of Old's. I have had really good luck with them and once installed they just keep working. Replacing points and condensor was around $20, and I read on here about lots of bad condensors when new. On one tractor I had trouble keeping the points adjusted prior to pussing on the ei. It is up to you, and depends upon how much you use the tractor. I don't think the EI is any better than good, properly adjusted points but for me has been less maintenance.

Non of my tractor have electronic ignitions and I almost never have any problems with them. Some I have not touched the point etc. in over 10 years now and they start when I want them to and do there jobs. But I have had to remove the electronic ignitions on other peoples tractor because they stopped working and at over $100 to replace them they said go back to pints at $10. I also have not changed a condenser in over 10 years on any thing

The only problem I have had with pertronix is when I left the original solid wire core wires on it and burn a module out, call pertronix and they sent me a new one no questions asked except "do you still have solid core wires on it?" when I told the gentleman that I did, he told me when those old wires get cracks in them and they "leak". His words not mine but I switched to new style wires and never had any more problems. I have a 240 utility with pertronix probably been in there 20+ years and use it a lot and never had the cap off.

I have one on my IH 300 and LOVE it. Before every time I went to start it, I had to clean the points. It is 2 hours away so I get up to the farm to use the 300 1 to 2 times a month. Every time clean the points and then hope it starts. This tractor sat from Nov. 15 to March 18 and never ran. When I hit the starter in March, it went over 1 1/2 times and was running!!! I helped a friend put one on his Ford 900 and the same thing. Before it might start and it might not without cleaning points. He even put new ones in and they were worse. So now it starts the same as my 300. Only negative thing is do not leave the key on without the engine running. Pertronix rep told me that would kill the module very quickly.
I have sold wires for plug wires and they work fine. Rep never told me anything about that. I thought I read or heard some place you should use the solid core wires because the radio resistance wires have too much resistance to fire the plugs correctly. Not sure, just what sticks in my mind.
I would not use points again for anything. Only if something happened to the module, I would put in the points and drive it in the shed that way. Then replace the module!!

I have a Farmall 300, with pertronics. It was that way when I bought it. I have owned it about six years and it hasn?t given me a bit of trouble. I use it to move snow in the winter and I?m amazed how fast it starts even on the coldest days. I have a friend that had a ford tractor with pertronics and he left the ingnition switch on when it wasn?t running. That ruins it really quick.

Forgot to say my Pertronix has been in my tractor 8 years now and has been great to start and run that tractor. No missing or anything like before after many hours of running the points had to be adjusted. One of the best investment for that tractor.

I have never changed one from points, but I have a couple electronic conversions here. Never a problem except if the 12 volt supply gets below 10vdc or so the 6 volt starters still spin the engine over fine, but the module has quit making spark. With jumper cables they will start right up. I still burnish my points with fine sandpaper as long as possible due to the poor quality of replacements. Don't buy them online, go to NAPA and ask for their best.

It gets drove almost daily and if not drive I at least start it and let it run but when it's nice I drive it on the gravel roads around home just to get outta the house soon as I find some equipment itll be put to work as well as play

Freightliner as in big rig 18 wheeler?? If so that is not a fun job. BTDT on an old Binder, if you do not know what them means ask. So was it a 13 speed or some other type like an Allison?? I have 4 10 wheel trucks on the place. 3 gas rigs with twin sticks and a 1963 Diamond-T which when it was built was the Caddy of trucks

Yea it was a freightliner big rig and it wasn't too bad just nasty cause it had oil slung from one end to the other...we pulled the transmission Saturday and got it all out back together last night

That could be a 10 speed or a 13 speed or even a 15 speed. I have something like 1.9 million miles under my belt and still counting but not all that fast any more. Back in 1974 I got a brand new Dodge van and had the watery expire in less then 30 days. I had put 13,000 mile on it

I see....I weld at a exhaust factory full time my best friends own a diesel repair shop and I help them when I have spare time or when they need a Extra set of hands

I'm also a person who got bored working so I have had more type of jobs then I can even remember. That Dodge van I had in 1974 had that many miles put on it due to me having two paper routes. Morning route was 1500 newspapers and afternoon route was 600. I got that van on my 18th birthday but ordered it when I was 17. I also spent 6 years In the Navy from July or 1974 till July or 1980. I was an Electronics' Tec. I worked on computers. But I have also been a welder a truck driver a maintenance man in a factory. Plus a lot of other jobs

Those truck transmission are a piece of cake, if you got the jack to handle them, they got 3 axis to control them!!

I just got back for a run to town to get a front tractor tire for the Farmall. Saw one of my customers in a store and asked him how his tractor was doing and he said running just fine. I then told him I guess I fixed it to good. Got a laugh out of him and the teller that was standing there

At least the tires on the front of an H are a more common tire size. The one I got is a 4.00X15 and the place I buy tires took 2 days to find me one and get this it was made In the U.S.A. which is uncommon also

You live In Missouri what part?? I too live in Missouri the Lake of the Ozarks area. I have 4 Hs on the place as well as a good many other tractors

Ok so not all that far from cape G and or Memphis TN. Someplace not all that far from I55. I live down in Cape G back when I was a whole lot younger as in under 4 years old

Years ago there was a big salvage yard up in Stove MO and the guy had just about any thing you could ever want. But he died and his kids just sold it all. By the way I am not color blind I own most any and all brands and at 30 plus have to many LOL Be they red, green orange or what ever other color you can think of

I have a 1935 JD-B on steel. I can tell you where it has been since 1940 and played on it when I was a kid. I also have the original owners manual that came with it when new. It was my grand fathers and he got it in 1940. When my dad passed away I got it and my grand kids have played on it. Last summer one of my customers called me and ask if I want his tractor and I told him I didn't have the $$ to buy it and he said no do you want it. Then he goes on and tells me it got hit by lightning and caught fire. He said come and get it, it is yours. It is an IH584 diesel and we winched it on the trailer but I drove it off less the n2 hours later.

I have 4 Hs. All are 1940 and one is a parts tractor and the other drove to where they are parked

I installed Electronic Ignition on all three of my old IH's (2 - 140's and a Cub) over 10 years ago. I have not had to tamper with anyone of them since. Much better reliability than the old points/condenser rig-a-ma-roll. What a marvelous upgrade this has been. Now, if I could only install electric fuel injection I would be a happier camper.
