666 motor transplant

I never done one either but i would guess it's longer, Just a tape measure will tell you for sure, and if you have to lengthen it that' s the easy part, or get some off a 1066 etc!!

Making a puller?
Been trying to talk the neighbor into putting a 466 into his, has a DT360 right now, probably right around 350-400 hp, which isn’t enough for the class he’s in with the tractors that are in there.
He claims there are holes in the frame for it, but I think the fan has to go to fit it with the radiator in the stock location.

His has a custom gear set, faster constant mesh with the 2,3 and 4 gears one tooth different from each other. If you want to speed up or slow down all you need to do is change the constant mesh. Has a 3 disk clutch, don’t cheap out, spend the money and get a good one, you’ll only have to buy it once.

Not a serious puller, mostly a toy tractor for tractor rides and maybe a local county fair pull. My research indicates you need a new front and
rear cover to accommodate the narrow frame rails. It looks like there might be holes in the frame for the additional length. Doing away with the
fan and using an electric model is a good alternative. Need an 11" clutch, but they are available in double or triple disk. I think triple would be
advisable. The TA will need to be trashed. Different ring and pinions are available, but I'm not aware of how you make the transmission durable
and have different gear choices. Would be interested in hearing about that.

I can almost guarantee an electric fan will not be enough to keep it cool over the long run, the stock propeller moves an impressive amount of air.

From what I understand the front and rear covers might be the more difficult to locate pieces, that’s why it’s easier to start with a diesel 666 with a 312 in it.

Skip the double and go right for 3 discs. I speak from experience as an observer.

Need a TA delete shaft.

If your serious about the trans you should talk to Carl at Atlas Tractor, he makes custom shafts and gears for the small frame IH’s. Difficult to get ahold of, but he does excellent work.

Two ring and pinions were used in the 656/666 Tractors, row crop and utility. Row crops had a 49/13 for a 3.77:1 and utility’s had a 49/16 for a 3.06:1

My neighbor pulled a few years on a worn out 4th gear and didn’t destroy it and 4th is not the widest gear in the trans stock. Now it has custom gears in 2,3 and 4th positions, stock 1st and no 5th because of how the constant mesh is held on, 5th is straight through the trans.

Well yea ya do . Along with the hood and everything else . this whole project will dig really deep into your piggy bank account and keep on digging as you make all kinds of spare pieces and parts .

Thanks for the input Mike. I think an electric fan will be
adequate since you're only pulling it for about 15 sec. Tractor
rides are at a low power setting so they should be adequate.
Interested in your transmission discussion. I don't want to give
up 5th gear. Now what are my options? Probably only use 4th
gear. But I would like a durable 4th
