1066 Noise when turning

I have a friend who has a 1066 with a differential lock. Evidently, this tractor makes no rear end noise going straight, but when turning, it makes a clunking noise in the transmission. He says it still happens when the differential lock is engaged, but not quite as bad. He was asking me what I thought the issue might be. I'm an Oliver guy, so I don't know anything about these 1066's, but told him I'd see what I could find.

Any thoughts on what generally would be the problem here?

Thanks!

You gotta understand that we're not there to hear the noise, and don't have X-ray vision... There are all sorts of places it can clunk, and there are all different types of clunks.

One way or another, someone is going to have to tear into it and find out what the problem is sooner or later. The prudent thing would be to take care of it now, but odds are he needs the tractor for work and can't live without it, so he could try and limp it through.

I understand. I'm not there either to hear it. Just wondering if there is something somewhat common inside that I could tell him that goes wrong.

you sure it's inside the transmission? easy things first, check the wheel clamps- both the cast hub to the axle and the wedges that attach the rim to the hub.

Well lets start off with you should not be turning while you have the dif . loc in and he probably has the duals on , so he is his worst enemy . Next ya want tio trash out a rear end fast is turning while under heavy load usen the brakes . You put way more strees in the side gears and pinions and by design they will run dry fast and start to guild and failure is not far behind , Next i would have to hear it doing it to tell if it was coming from the right side or the left as it could be a Bull pinion with a broke/ chipped tooth , could be a failing bearing on a bull pinion . But just keep on running it as it will let you know what it finally takes the big dump as this will dig deep in the piggy bank and it is NOIT going to be a one day job . My one good friend would never listen to me about turning sharp at the end of the field while the implement was still in the ground and would STAND on the brake hard tryen to make the turn , i kept on telling him but he would not listen , then he started telling me about all the sparly's he was seeing in the hyd. filter . All i said was yep you got SPARKLYS in the filter you'll find out just keep on doing what ya have been doing. I get a call one morning around 7:30 and he tells me that the clutch went out while he was turning ,ah NO the clutch did not go out and he kept on insisting that it did , Nope not clutch that would have been a half day job and under a grand to fix . The rear end went and like your friend's his tractor had the dif loc also . That job dug into his pockets big time and i was easy on the labor as it only cost him half a cow all cut and neatly wrapped . Had he had it done at the dealer labor alone would have been a cow and a half . To drive home my point on proper driving of said tractor while working ground i made him go after the parts and the parts for a dif loc rear are getting harder to find .
