Farmall h and M front tire sizes? (opinions -not originals)

As this has been my summer of shuffling rear tires around on my fleet of antiquer's (been changing em myself...oh the fun ).

Figured I might as well plan on changing some fronts tires too.

Farmall M: Has 13.6 x 38 on the rear. Leaning towards 6.00 x 16 on the front but this tractor has Behlen power steering so I could likely also get by with 6.50 x 16 tires, Will likely pick a 3-rib design. Tractor is mostly used to run a haybine, hay baler, ocassional bush hogging, etc. No tillage work to speak of. Which size would you go with and what tread design?

Farmall H: Has 12.4 x 38 on rear. Leaning towards either 5.50 x 16 or possibly 6.00 x 16. Likely go with 3 rib design as well. This tractor has manual manpower steering so wanna keep the steering as easy as possible. Uses are hay raking, hay tedding, haybine, bush hogging, and no tillage to speak of. Which size and tread design would you go for?

All opinions sought and neither of these are showpieces in anyway so could care less about factory original. More interested in what will work best.

My new experience this summer was with a used set of radials, 14.9x38,bought them not thinking of the height, but there shorter than the old bias tire's i took off, they look short, but guess the little i use it, they will be ok,it will be intresting to see if they slip as much on the plow ! I had a set of rim's widen, to put on 7,50x16 on front but that will really look odd, with those on back now !!!

I have both SM and SH. The SM has 13.6 on the rear. Have another M with 14.9x38,that tire works nicely too. The fronts on both are 6.50x16.Would go with 7.50x16 if the rims would fit.The SH had 12.4 on the rear, and 6.00x16 on front.Run triribs on all of them. You wont notice any difference on how hard eithr tire turs without power steering.None of my tractors has PS.IMHO.12.4 is too small for an M. 11.2 is too small for an h.

I am building a set of wider rims to accept 7.50x16 tires for my (loader)M. How wide did you make them?I'm thinking 6" should work best.

Delta - A 6 inch wide rim is what you need for a 7.50x16. I was always going to weld up a 6x15 rim to
bolt to the cast centers on my SH and put 7.5Lx15's on it to match up with the 12.4x38's on it.

RankRank - either 6.00x16 or 6.50x16 work on an M, the tractor sits level with most 13.6x38's on the
back. On an H with 12.4x38's on the back I'd put 5.50x16's on the front. Sits level and a tiny bit
easier to steer since no PS.

These old Letter Series tractors only look right with 3-rib frt tires.

I agree with the three rib front tyres but here is an early example with single rib front tyres (36 inch rims on back)

Been running 7.50s on factory rims for many years. Held up much better and roll much easier in soft ground than the 6.50s previously used on the loader tractor. I'm running them with 14.9s on the rear

Those rims i widen out are 6.5 inches wide, 2 inches were put in.They look wide, almost wide enough to put some my old pickup tires on them!

But my 14.9x38 are radial and are 1 3/4 shorter than the Firestone All Traction/s that i took off, i dont want a tractor that looks like it's going uphill !!

Single rib frt tires are the right tire for some jobs, but for most hard surface running and ALL usage with a front end loader or frt mounted cultivator the single rib is the wrong tire.

Well choice was made on 2 of the tires for the Farmall M fronts. Going with the Carlisle 6.00 x 16 tri-rib 6 ply at a price of $53.80 each from Wallyworld.com with free shipping to my local Wallyworld store where I can pick em up.

Probably should order 2 more for the Farmall h but will wait and see if I like the first 2 Carlisle tires first. I do have a set of like new 5.50 x 16 on my JD A. It may make sense for me move them to the Farmall h and order another set of these 6.00 x 16 Wally World tires to put on the JD A. I am not really a huge Carlisle fan but for the $ should be better than the tri ribs that are my Farmall M now which are worn into racing slicks.

Thanks Bandit Farmer for the vendor tip. Some of you may remember that Bandit used to post on the YT site a lot...

My apologies to anyone who went to an indecent web site. In my area Wally World is synomonous with Walmart. Plus I thought it was clear since I mentioned going to my local store for free pick up. ( I actually purposely did not type Walmart as I was afraid this site would block the name. YT's censorship filter seems to often block any vendors who sell tractor parts...and there is no editing a post on this website anymore either so no way to fix).

As for your simple tire website recommendation...the cheapest tire I found in my 600 x 16 tri-rib size on there is $59.99 which is more than I paid and I got a better tire IMOP. Same tire brand of tire I bought is a whole lot more on simple tire.
