330 PTO issues

Hi all I am new to the forum. I have a 1957 330 utility and I am currently having problems with my pto housing on the tractor getting hot after about an hour of mowing. I use a woods 6 footfinish mower to cut. I adjusted the bands according to the book and just changed oil in the planetary. Anybody have any suggestions on what to do next. Also I am not sure of the exact temp since I do not own a heat gun but the housing is hot to the touch.

If the band type PTO (small oval cover ofer the adjustment screws) make very sure there is no lost motion in the linkage from the lever to the thing
that looks like a weight (it is a tensioner) If zero slop, adjust it like this. With the lever carefully centered in the range of motion, and tied
there, make sure the PTO turns by hand at the shaft. Adjust the front band tighter until you can't turn the shaft with a gloved hand. thenback off
the screw until it is free to turn (often 1/2 turn or a little more). Adjust the rear band the same way. If the adjustment screws are starting to go
level with the jamb nuts, it is probably time for getting the bands relined. THey do get warm/hot when running, but not boiling hot. Jim

At the end of the lever where the threads are I had to cut about an inch off because they were stripped out then I put a coupling nut and a piece of alll thread and screwed on the rod end. The rod end has some slight play in it due to being stripped but that?s the only slop, very minimal. My anti creep band is worn as it is level with the top of the nut. Would the worn out band be the cause of the pto housing being hot?

I measure the throw of the lever, and if I have a helper, they hold it there. if not, ai rope it in place. There were marks on the first production utilities and Farmalls with that PTO. Mine doesn't have the marks. If the lever moves 1/2 inch with no movement at the PTO. it needs the slop taken out. Part 17 and 15 show a keyway and woodruf key that are often the issue. They can be milled out to larger size and a full key used in place of the shorter working length woodruf. Jim
